Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort
Nozawa onsen classic ski resort
Nozawa Onsen is one of Japan's most famous ski areas. Skiing in Nozawa dates back to 1918, and the first ski lift opened in 1950. The Hikage gondola opened in 1979, and the original Nagasaka gondola opened in 1990. Since last year there is a brand new Gondola linking up the village with the Yamabiko ski area and the Yamabiko quad lift.
Nozawa usually enjoys consistent heavy snowfall and an impressive vertical of over 1,000m. The snow is left ungroomed on some official runs and backcountry tree skiing is popular. Although visitors from overseas have increased in recent years the village largely retains a traditional Japanese feel.
Nozawa ski resort is perfect for families. The best beginner run at the top of the Gondola is called Uenotaira. 2000 meters long on a gentle slope its a great run for kids and adult beginners alike. Skyline run or challenge 39 is for the more advanced skiers and boards. Nozawa Onsen offers plenty of side country options too and tree skiing is famous.
